The image on this t-shirt is of an advertisment for the illustrious Bacon & Day #9 "NE Plus Ultra" Silver Bell Banjo. It was an absolutely beautiful, extremely ornate, excellent sounding pre-war banjo. Incidentalily, there was never a "Bacon & Day Company" nor for that matter a "B & D Banjo Company." It was always called the Fred Bacon Manufacturing Company, or the Bacon Banjo Company, or some variant thereof. The "D" of "B&D" was in fact David L. Day, but his name was never part of the company name. The "Silver Bell" banjo line was introduced in 1923 in the midst of the roaring twenties. The "Silver Bell" exemplifies the decadence of the age and the quality of craftmanship during those times. The "#9 NE Plus Ultra" was very colorfully adorned and inlaid with expensive mother of pearl shell, its brass metal pieces were all ornately engraved, and the wooden parts were carved and finished very elegantly both on the front of instrument and the back. The Silver Bell Banjo was a fantastic reminder of the exuberance of the era. We hope you enjoy the t-shirt as much as we do.
